Live Podcasting Is Changing the Creator Economy: My Conversation with Sara Sheehan

I recently had the chance to join Transformational Thinkers with Sara Sheehan for a conversation about something I believe is going to completely reshape the future of podcasting: live podcasting and the rise of Infinite-Seat Theaters.

For years, podcasters have been told the same thing. Grow your downloads. Chase advertisers. Hit massive audience numbers. Then maybe one day you can make money.

The problem is that model only works for a very small percentage of creators.

During the conversation, Sara and I discussed why independent podcasters are struggling to monetize through traditional advertising models and why live experiences may be the missing piece that changes everything.

Why Most Podcasters Never Make Money

One of the biggest points we explored was how difficult it is for smaller podcasters to generate meaningful income from CPM advertising. Most creators simply never reach the download numbers needed to create sustainable revenue.

That creates frustration because many podcasters are producing incredible content, building loyal communities, and investing huge amounts of time into their shows without seeing a financial return.

I explained that instead of waiting years to maybe monetize through ads, creators should focus on building experiences people are willing to pay for immediately.

That shift completely changes the economics of podcasting.

Four people paying $10 to attend a live show can outperform thousands of downloads in ad revenue. Twenty people attending regularly can completely change the future of a podcast.

That realization became the foundation for everything I’m building with Poduty Live and the Infinite-Seat Theater concept.

What Is an Infinite-Seat Theater?

The Infinite-Seat Theater is built around a simple idea:

A live podcast venue should not be limited by the number of physical seats in the room.

The venue may only hold 20, 40, or 100 people in person, but through livestreaming and hybrid event technology, the audience can become unlimited.

That means creators can build intimate live experiences while still reaching people around the world.

During the episode, Sara and I talked about how this model allows creators to transform coffee shops, small theaters, breweries, bars, and community spaces into scalable media experiences.

The goal is not to compete with giant arenas or celebrity podcasts.

The goal is to help independent creators build profitable, community-driven experiences right now.

Live Podcasting Creates Stronger Communities

One of my favorite parts of the conversation was discussing how live podcasting changes the relationship between creators and audiences.

When people attend a live show, they become part of the experience.

They laugh together.
They interact with guests.
They meet other fans.
They feel emotionally connected to the creator in a completely different way than simply listening alone through headphones.

Sara made a great point during the episode about how live events also elevate credibility for podcasters.

When someone performs on a real stage in front of a live audience, people view the creator differently. Sponsors view them differently. Family members view them differently. The audience becomes more invested in the creator’s journey.

That energy is hard to replicate digitally alone.

Monetization Beyond Advertising

We also explored how live podcasting opens the door to multiple revenue streams beyond traditional ads.

Creators can monetize through:

  • Ticket sales
  • VIP experiences
  • Merchandise
  • Sponsorship placements
  • Audience participation opportunities
  • BYOB upgrades
  • Livestream tickets
  • Membership communities

Instead of relying on a single revenue source, creators can layer together multiple smaller monetization opportunities that grow over time.

This is one of the reasons I believe live podcasting is such an important business model for independent creators.

Why Live Experiences Are Growing Again

Another major theme we discussed was the growing demand for authentic human experiences.

As AI-generated content becomes more common and digital experiences become more automated, people are craving real interaction more than ever.

Live podcasting gives audiences something they cannot get from scrolling social media feeds.

It creates connection.

It creates memories.

It creates community.

I believe we are entering a period where smaller live venues and creator-focused spaces will become increasingly important for independent media.

Building Something New Is Not Always Easy

Sara and I also talked honestly about entrepreneurship and the emotional side of building something new.

Creating the Poduty Live Podcast Theater and pushing the Infinite-Seat Theater concept has come with plenty of uncertainty, risk, and challenges.

Bootstrapping a new business model means learning constantly, adapting constantly, and staying resilient even when growth takes longer than expected.

But I truly believe we are still early in what live podcasting can become.

The same way comedians tour comedy clubs and musicians tour music venues, I believe podcasters will eventually tour networks of podcast theaters across the country.

That future may sound unusual today, but so did podcasting itself twenty years ago.

Final Thoughts

One of the biggest messages I wanted listeners to take away from the episode is this:

Creators should stop waiting for permission.

You do not need millions of downloads to build something meaningful.
You do not need a giant studio.
You do not need a massive production budget.

You need a voice, a community, and the willingness to create experiences people care about.

I’m grateful to Sara Sheehan for creating such a thoughtful conversation around entrepreneurship, leadership, podcasting, and creator monetization. We covered a lot of ground, and I think the discussion will resonate with creators trying to figure out where podcasting is heading next.
